SML-8168F Smart Network Cable Tester
For cable wire mapping and port location on non-PoE or standards-compliant PoE switches.

- Wire mapping of network, telephone, and shielded network cables
- Switch-port flashing on non-PoE and standards-compliant PoE switches
- Three-position physical switch: port flash, cable test, and OFF
A two-piece smart network cable tester with wire mapping and switch-port flashing, powered by a 9 V battery and controlled by port-flash, cable-test, and OFF switch positions.
Product Overview
The SML-8168F adds switch-port flashing to wire mapping of network, telephone, and shielded network cables. Its three physical switch positions are port flash, cable test, and OFF. For wire mapping, select cable test and connect the cable ends to the main and remote units. To locate a port on a non-PoE or standards-compliant PoE switch, connect only the main unit and select port flash.
During switch-port flashing, the red work indicator is on; this model has no yellow charging indicator. Locate the target by observing the switch-port indicator, then move the tester switch to OFF after use.
The product image shows the general series appearance. The panel and interfaces vary by model; refer to the corresponding unit.
Typical Applications
- Network wire-order and fault checks in structured cabling projects
- Matching patch-panel cables to connected switch ports
- Troubleshooting RJ45 network, RJ11 telephone, and shielded network cables
- Cable maintenance in equipment rooms, wiring closets, and security installations

Use and Safety Limits
For wire mapping, connect the cable ends to the main and remote units and select cable test. Switch-port flashing is limited to non-PoE or standards-compliant PoE switches; connect only the main unit and do not use the remote.
The tester does not identify the switch category or PoE type. If the category cannot be confirmed, treat it as a non-standard PoE switch and disconnect the switch and its power first. A non-standard PoE switch is covered only by the nominal 60 V burnout protection; test functions are unavailable and their results must not be used. The 60 V value is a nominal protection rating, not a normal operating voltage or PoE-detection capability. Do not connect the tester to mains power, high-voltage wiring, or a circuit of unknown voltage.
